How Card Games Became Popular During the Pandemic

    on July 29, 2025

When the world shut down in 2020, people were forced to find new ways to stay entertained, connected, and mentally stimulated from the comfort of their homes. Surprisingly—or perhaps not—card games quickly rose to the top of the list. But why did card games become so popular during the pandemic, and what made them stand out among other forms of entertainment?

The Rise of Card Games in Isolation

With families stuck at home and friends separated by lockdowns, classic card games like Poker, Uno, and Rummy provided more than just fun—they offered connection. Whether played over Zoom or at the kitchen table, card games helped people feel a little less isolated.

More complex strategy card games and collectible card games (CCGs) such as Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon also saw a spike in popularity. For many, it was the perfect time to finally dive into a new hobby, build decks, or revisit childhood favorites.

    Mental Escape & Routine

Card games also provided a much-needed mental escape. In a time when digital fatigue was real, and screen time reached all-time highs, sitting down to shuffle a physical deck of cards felt refreshingly tactile. Many players discovered that even a quick game of Solitaire or a round of Skip-Bo could ease anxiety and bring a sense of routine to unpredictable days.

    A Return to Tangible Entertainment

The pandemic reminded us how much we crave hands-on experiences. Board games and card games made a massive comeback, especially among millennials and Gen Z. These games weren’t just nostalgic—they were also social, strategic, and stimulating, giving people a break from binge-watching and doomscrolling.

And unlike many other hobbies, card games are relatively inexpensive, portable, and endlessly replayable.
